Moms of Special Needs Children

As I'm blogging about mothers this week, it's difficult to forget the extraordinary efforts of moms who have children with special needs.

Remember: It is not bad parenting that causes psychiatric, behavioral, or developmental disorders, but it takes an exceptional parent to dig down deep into reservoirs of untapped strength to raise this child.

I also write a work blog for my counseling practice, and this week I wrote about moms of children with special needs (see here).  Please take a look, and consider the unique challenge faced by mothers of children with special needs.  These are moms I work with every day, and I praise their efforts.

If you are a mother of children with special needs, kudos to you for your extraordinary efforts.

If you know a mom of a special needs child, ask yourself what you can do to increase their support (i.e. decrease their stress).  Call them just to talk.  Take them to lunch.  Babysit while they run errands.  Help them mother their special needs child.  That would truly be the Mother's Day gift that keeps on giving.

I was just talking to a friend today who is the mom of a special needs child. And I could tell there is still so much guilt/grief. Thank you for these words.

EXACTLY!! I'm so very tired of the misconceptions and myths about our kids with diagnosed mental illnesses/disorders. And of course, our parenting skills are the number ONE target.

It's not an easy task to take on, but I do like reaping the rewards along with my son.
